Monsanto Will Soon Be Allowed To Police Itself

Monsanto

Monsanto, enemy of organic farmers and anti-GMO advocates alike, will likely be allowed to conduct its own environmental studies as part of a two-year USDA experiment. But there is no good that can possibly come of an experiment where the company behind nearly every genetically modified crop in our daily diets is allowed to decide whether its products are causing any environmental harm. And Monsanto isn’t the only biotech company that will be permitted to police itself.

As it stands, the USDA is responsible for assessing environmental impacts of new GMO crops. The agency has been lax about this, to say the least. In 2005, the USDA gave Monsanto the go-ahead to unleash its sugar beets before preparing an Environmental Impact Statement. This decision eventually triggered a judge to rule that Monsanto sugar beet seedlings should be ripped from the ground.

Because the USDA is so bad at doing its job on time, the agency decided to see if anyone else was prepared to do its safety testing work instead. And so it looks like the USDA will at least temporarily hand over environmental impact reporting responsibilities to the biotech companies behind GMO crops. The pilot program will allow these companies to conduct their own environmental assessments of crops or outsource the work to contractors. The USDA will still get the final say in determining the safety of crops.

The USDA won’t actually admit that it’s bad at performing its duties–instead, the agency claims that the move will make the environmental reporting process more timely, efficient, and cost-effective, according to the Federal Register (PDF). No knock on Monsanto, which is surely made up of great, honest people, but if the company has a vested interest in getting one of its crops deregulated, why wouldn’t it try to fudge the numbers on an environmental review? And why wouldn’t its hired contractors do the same? If this wasn’t so dangerous, it would be funny.

Already, GMO crops are causing environmental problems. Monsanto’s Roundup Ready soy, corn, and cotton have spawned Roundup-resistant superweeds, which force farmers to douse their crops in even more Roundup Ready pesticides (that’s called synergy). And cross-pollination between GMO and non-GMO crops is making it ever more difficult for companies to stay organic.

Don’t expect any immediately catastrophic changes to the food-supply chain. Instead, the USDA’s experiment may slowly push through more GMO crops into fields and onto our plates. One day, we may realize that these crops have triggered irreversible damages. At least we’ll know exactly who to blame.

Tea Party Brings Environmental Meltdown to America

Wednesday 31 August 2011
by: Dr. Brian Moench, Truthout | Op-Ed

For Tea Party zealots it is impossible to utter, hear, read or write the words “freedom” and “liberty” too many times. And, of course, to them, the antithesis of freedom and liberty is the federal government, which they swear they will “take back.”

For them, taking back the government means restoring the freedom to not be able to afford health care, restoring the freedom to be unemployed without any unemployment insurance, restoring the freedom to lose your home to mortgage fraud and your pension to criminal Wall Street bankers. That doesn’t sound much like a “Party” to me; that sounds more like a nightmare.

Even though many of their devotees don’t realize it themselves, what the Tea Party Nightmare is actually selling is not freedom for you, but more freedom for corporate America to deny your freedom. And, this year, no freedom is more important to the Tea Party Nightmare than the freedom for corporations to make you sick by polluting our air and water. Every Republican presidential candidate and virtually every Republican Congressperson has joined the Tea Party Nightmare chorus in ranting against the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) and not just the EPA regulating greenhouse gases, but against everything the EPA does. Michelle Bachmann, the Tea Party Nightmare’s charmingly oblivious and truly frightening presidential pinup girl, proudly wants to abolish the EPA. Not to be out done, pistol packin’ Rick Perry sounds like he wants to torture everyone who works there and shoot it with his gun before he abolishes it.

The 1979 movie “China Syndrome” brought to life the danger of a nuclear reactor meltdown. Within weeks, the first of real-life meltdowns occurred at Three Mile Island, then Chernobyl, then Fukushima. China is now in total environmental “meltdown,” a new version of the China Syndrome if you will. With a political posture smothered in irony, the party that worships freedom wants the US to mimic China, the most repressive of major governments, in turning this country into a corporate-caused environmental meltdown. Call it the Tea Party Nightmare version of the China Syndrome.

Most Westerners have read about or seen pictures of the environmental catastrophe that is now China. If you haven’t, go here. China actually has fairly strict environmental laws, but they are not enforced. Businessmen there are all too often free to do as they please, a core Tea Party Nightmare tenet.

So, how well is this Tea Party Nightmare brand of environmental protection working out in China? Chinese authorities admit that, every year, 750,000 thousand of their citizens die from air pollution and 60,000 from water pollution.(1) Outside organizations think that is a gross underestimation. According to the Chinese Ministry of Health, pollution has made cancer the leading cause of death in China, followed by respiratory and heart diseases also related to their air pollution. Only 1 percent of the country’s 560 million city dwellers breathe air considered safe by the European Union, because all of China’s major cities are constantly covered in a toxic, gray shroud.(2) In 2008, I inhaled the gray shroud smothering Beijing for two weeks. I’ve never been the same since.

Chinese citizens are becoming increasingly aware of how the China Syndrome is affecting their health, longevity and livelihoods. In 2009, China had almost 90,000 incidents of riots, mass protests, petitions, and other acts of civil unrest, most of them triggered by outrage over chronic or acute pollution episodes.(3) Some of these demonstrations and riots involved at least 15,000 people willing to risk arrest, beatings and even their lives.(4)

After an extensive investigation in 2007, The New York Times wrote, “Environmental degradation is now so severe, with such stark domestic and international repercussions, that pollution poses not only a major long-term burden on the Chinese public, but also an acute political challenge to the ruling Communist Party.”(5)

Not only is pollution causing massive civil unrest in China, it is also a severe economic liability. Our own State Department estimates that pollution costs the Chinese between 7 and 10 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP).(6) That virtually eliminates all of their growth in GDP. In other words, this is not only an environmental, aesthetic and public health disaster; it is an economic disaster as well. And the Tea Party Nightmare wants this China Syndrome to come to America. Actually, some of it already has.

Satellite photos reveal an “Asian Brown Cloud,” a massive plume of Asian industrial pollution and dust from the Gobi Desert constantly making its way across the Pacific Ocean and reaching the United States. On average, about 20-30 percent of the air pollution over Los Angeles originates in China.(7) In May 2006, University of California-Davis researchers claimed that almost all the particulate matter over Lake Tahoe came from China.(8) Mercury, furans and dioxins from the burning of coal in Chinese power plants and cement kilns circle the entire globe – as does our own pollution – adding to the growing contamination of the US environment with these intensely hazardous toxins.

Why is China having an environmental meltdown and the United States is not … yet? Two reasons: first, much of our manufacturing has moved to China, and second, we have for now – but if the Tea Party Nightmare has their way, not for long – a functioning EPA.

Americans do not support eviscerating the EPA. Even those who don’t appreciate the connection between their health and the environment still want it protected. In fact, numerous polls taken even recently, in the midst of our moribund economy, show that people don’t think the environment has to be sacrificed for economic recovery; they don’t want environmental regulations watered down and are even willing to pay more out of their pockets for cleaner energy.(9)(10)

But for the Republican/Tea Party Nightmare, what the people want is of little concern. Remember, that freedom thing is for corporations only, and they are intent on bringing the China Syndrome to America.

The unpalatable truth is that the anti-nuclear lobby has misled us all

Over the last fortnight I’ve made a deeply troubling discovery. The anti-nuclear movement to which I once belonged has misled the world about the impacts of radiation on human health. The claims we have made are ungrounded in science, unsupportable when challenged, and wildly wrong. We have done other people, and ourselves, a terrible disservice.

I began to see the extent of the problem after a debate last week with Helen Caldicott. Dr Caldicott is the world’s foremost anti-nuclear campaigner. She has received 21 honorary degrees and scores of awards, and was nominated for a Nobel peace prize. Like other greens, I was in awe of her. In the debate she made some striking statements about the dangers of radiation. So I did what anyone faced with questionable scientific claims should do: I asked for the sources. Caldicott’s response has profoundly shaken me.

Daniel Pudles Illustration by Daniel PudlesFirst she sent me nine documents: newspaper articles, press releases and an advertisement. None were scientific publications; none contained sources for the claims she had made. But one of the press releases referred to a report by the US National Academy of Sciences, which she urged me to read. I have now done so – all 423 pages. It supports none of the statements I questioned; in fact it strongly contradicts her claims about the health effects of radiation.

I pressed her further and she gave me a series of answers that made my heart sink – in most cases they referred to publications which had little or no scientific standing, which did not support her claims or which contradicted them. (I have posted our correspondence, and my sources, on my website.) I have just read her book Nuclear Power Is Not the Answer. The scarcity of references to scientific papers and the abundance of unsourced claims it contains amaze me.

For the last 25 years anti-nuclear campaigners have been racking up the figures for deaths and diseases caused by the Chernobyl disaster, and parading deformed babies like a medieval circus. They now claim 985,000 people have been killed by Chernobyl, and that it will continue to slaughter people for generations to come. These claims are false.

The UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (Unscear) is the equivalent of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Like the IPCC, it calls on the world’s leading scientists to assess thousands of papers and produce an overview. Here is what it says about the impacts of Chernobyl.

Of the workers who tried to contain the emergency at Chernobyl, 134 suffered acute radiation syndrome; 28 died soon afterwards. Nineteen others died later, but generally not from diseases associated with radiation. The remaining 87 have suffered other complications, including four cases of solid cancer and two of leukaemia.

In the rest of the population there have been 6,848 cases of thyroid cancer among young children – arising “almost entirely” from the Soviet Union’s failure to prevent people from drinking milk contaminated with iodine 131. Otherwise “there has been no persuasive evidence of any other health effect in the general population that can be attributed to radiation exposure”. People living in the countries affected today “need not live in fear of serious health consequences from the Chernobyl accident”.

Caldicott told me that Unscear’s work on Chernobyl is “a total cover-up”. Though I have pressed her to explain, she has yet to produce a shred of evidence for this contention.

In a column last week, the Guardian’s environment editor, John Vidal, angrily denounced my position on nuclear power. On a visit to Ukraine in 2006, he saw “deformed and genetically mutated babies in the wards … adolescents with stunted growth and dwarf torsos; foetuses without thighs or fingers”. What he did not see was evidence that these were linked to the Chernobyl disaster.

Professor Gerry Thomas, who worked on the health effects of Chernobyl for Unscear, tells me there is “absolutely no evidence” for an increase in birth defects. The National Academy paper Dr Caldicott urged me to read came to similar conclusions. It found that radiation-induced mutation in sperm and eggs is such a small risk “that it has not been detected in humans, even in thoroughly studied irradiated populations such as those of Hiroshima and Nagasaki”.

Like Vidal and many others, Caldicott pointed me to a book which claims that 985,000 people have died as a result of the disaster. Translated from Russian and published by the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, this is the only document that looks scientific and appears to support the wild claims made by greens about Chernobyl.

A devastating review in the journal Radiation Protection Dosimetry points out that the book achieves this figure by the remarkable method of assuming that all increased deaths from a wide range of diseases – including many which have no known association with radiation – were caused by the Chernobyl accident. There is no basis for this assumption, not least because screening in many countries improved dramatically after the disaster and, since 1986, there have been massive changes in the former eastern bloc. The study makes no attempt to correlate exposure to radiation with the incidence of disease.

Its publication seems to have arisen from a confusion about whether Annals was a book publisher or a scientific journal. The academy has given me this statement: “In no sense did Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences or the New York Academy of Sciences commission this work; nor by its publication do we intend to independently validate the claims made in the translation or in the original publications cited in the work. The translated volume has not been peer reviewed by the New York Academy of Sciences, or by anyone else.”

Failing to provide sources, refuting data with anecdote, cherry-picking studies, scorning the scientific consensus, invoking a cover-up to explain it: all this is horribly familiar. These are the habits of climate-change deniers, against which the green movement has struggled valiantly, calling science to its aid. It is distressing to discover that when the facts don’t suit them, members of this movement resort to the follies they have denounced.

We have a duty to base our judgments on the best available information. This is not only because we owe it to other people to represent the issues fairly, but also because we owe it to ourselves not to squander our lives on fairytales. A great wrong has been done by this movement. We must put it right.

After Libya declares ceasefire, U.S. government lays bare its imperialist ambitions

White House moves towards war, seeking regime change or partition

The Libyan government’s unilateral cease-fire and call for negotiations with those in the armed rebellion who, in the words of the Foreign Minister, believe in Libya’s “territorial unity,” have created an unanticipated hitch in the fast-track plans of British, French and U.S. imperialism to start bombing the country.

The imperialist powers are scrambling to find a way around Gaddafi’s peace offer and initiate the military attack to topple the Libyan government, or, as an alternative, create a de facto partition of the country. Today, Obama threatened to attack unless the Libyan government pulled its troops back from nearly half of the country. Claiming that “parts of the country declared their independence,” the White House appears to be preparing for a second option: the country’s virtual partition, which would allow the Western-supported National Transitional Council to become the de facto government of Libya’s oil-rich eastern territory.

Libya is Africa’s largest oil producer.

Partition and dismemberment of countries with independent governments has been a strategy that the U.S., British and French governments employed in the Kurdish region of Iraq after the 1991 war, in Yugoslavia in the mid-1990’s, and recently in Sudan, which until January was Africa’s largest country. Of course, the biggest prize for imperialist expansion through the act of dismemberment was the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. For decades during the so-called Cold War the U.S. government, and especially the Central Intelligence Agency, crusaded on behalf of the “captive nations” of the Soviet Union. Its break-up was immediately followed by the eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the incorporation of the western and southern republics of the former Soviet Union into the U.S. sphere of influence.

The breakup or de facto partition of Libya would be a great historical tragedy for the people, but would become a boon for all of the western oil giants.

At the very moment that the UN Security Council condemned the Gaddafi government for the use of violence against the armed rebels in Libya, a U.S.-backed violent suppression of peaceful protestors was underway in Bahrain and Yemen. Today, in response to the killing of more than 40 unarmed protesters in Yemen, the White House statement urged “peaceful, orderly” dialogue, and “an open and transparent process.” The difference is that the Bahraini and Saudi monarchies, and the Yemeni government, exist as client dictatorships of the United States.

On March 17, the same day that the U.S. government and UN Security Council authorized a military attack against Libya on the pretext that Gaddafi government was employing violence in its own civil war, CIA drone aircrafts blitzed a village in northwest Pakistan. Multiple missiles scored a direct hit on a meeting of local people who were trying to resolve a property dispute. The meeting was allegedly mediated by Taliban officials, which made the people fair game for robotic destruction. Twenty six of the 32 people present at the Jirga (the negotiation council) were killed.

Just a week ago, nine Afghan boys were systematically murdered by a U.S. helicopter attack while they were collecting firewood to heat their family homes.

For the last decade, the Libyan government embraced neoliberal reforms and collaborated with Italian, British and U.S. imperialism. When the armed revolt began against Gaddafi, the United States and other powers saw a new opportunity to regain control over this oil-rich country. Now, even if the imperialists were to reverse course and accept a ceasefire in Libya, their basic strategy of regime change, and/or partition, would remain. An unnamed White House official told CNN today, “If you have a cease-fire in place that is verifiable, then you can continue turning the noose without taking necessarily further action.”

The U.S., British and French governments don’t care about freedom, democracy or the use of violence. They have employed limitless violence for centuries against the people of the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America who suffered the scourge of colonialism and foreign occupation. The interests of the imperialists are exclusively predatory.

U.S. progressives must tell truth about Libya and impact of foreign intervention

Washington looking for a gateway to domination

March 23, 2011, will mark the 25th anniversary of the murder of 35 Libyan sailors whose patrol boat was destroyed by missiles launched during an aerial and naval assault by U.S. air forces in waters along Libya’s coast in the Gulf of Sidra.

The operation began in the evening of March 23, 1986, with an armada from the U.S. Sixth Fleet. It consisted of three aircraft carriers, 250 fighter aircraft and bombers, 12 destroyers, five cruisers, six frigates and 27,000 personnel.

Former President Ronald Reagan and the Pentagon brass carried out the large scale incursion into Libyan waters as a deliberate provocation. It was part of a larger, on-going military plan. The goal was to weaken the Libyan regime and foment an internal rebellion to topple it. It was similar to the strategy employed five years later against the Iraqi government led by Saddam Hussein.

The next phase of the operation began three weeks later. On April 15, 1986, the U.S. Air Force attacked the cities of Tripoli and Benghazi. The United States dropped 120,000 pounds of bombs in a matter of minutes. There were scores of Libyan civilian casualties, as homes, schools and other buildings were destroyed in the middle of the night by the “surprise” attack. Libyan government buildings were hit, and the home of Gaddafi was hit with several bombs.

The Reagan administration claimed that the April 15 bombing attack was retaliation for an April 5, 1986, bomb explosion in a Berlin discotheque that claimed the life of a U.S. service member. The implication was that Libya planted the bomb in Berlin to retaliate for the March 23 U.S. attack that killed the 35 Libyan sailors. Later documents proved, however, that advanced planning for the April 15 bombing attack on Tripoli and Benghazi had been going on for at least one year and that a full scale mock rehearsal, including the use of mock bombs, had taken place in July 1985—11 months before the explosion at the Berlin disco.

‘Regime change’

The Libyan regime, which came to power in a 1969 coup against the western-backed monarchy of King Idris, was targeted for regime change by the United States and Britain after it nationalized Libya’s oil wealth and used the resources to develop the country.

During that same time period—the 1980s—the U.S. government armed, financed and propped up dictatorships in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, other Arab client states, along with the regime in Tel Aviv. The CIA also funded Osama Bin Laden and other reactionary forces that sought to topple the government in Afghanistan.

U.S. policy had nothing to do with human rights, democracy or the war on terror. It employed terror to maintain a system of proxy regimes and to overthrow governments that were outside the U.S. sphere of influence. These are historical facts.

Washington did not succeed in toppling the Gadaffi government, but Libya did indeed go through regime change. The regime itself shifted its domestic and international policies. It moved steadily to the right.

In the last decade, it has adopted a variety of neoliberal reforms, embraced and collaborated with the Bush administration’s so-called war on terror, increasingly exported Libyan resources to invest in Italian corporations and banks, while becoming politically friendly with the right-wing government of Silvio Berlusconi, and opened Libyan oil business to BP.

If there had been no recent revolt in Libya, the United States, Britain and Italy would have been content to have the Gadaffi regime—with its neoliberal orientation—remain in power. Although Gadaffi was neither a puppet, nor a client, it was clear that the regime’s neoliberal, collaborationist orientation made it a satisfactory partner with the imperialist governments of the west.

Pleading for intervention

Following the peoples’ uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia and throughout the Arab world, a civil war has broken out in Libya. Disaffected elements from within the regime, including those inside of its military and security units took up arms. Long standing regional rivalries also played a big part. The revolt was particularly strong in Benghazi and other cities in the oil-rich eastern part of the country.

Both the regime and its opponents have armed units. Both have a political and social base within parts of the population. It is not possible from outside the country to really know the extent of the support for either side. Within the revolt there are contradictory political trends. While the opposition is politically heterogeneous, what is decisive is the position and orientation of the dominant leadership inside the movement.

The Libyan people generally have a high anti-colonial consciousness and are undoubtedly opposed to U.S./NATO intervention. But under the circumstances of mass upheaval and armed struggle, the orientation of the leadership is central.

Leaders of the opposition National Libyan Council (also calling themselves the National Transition Council), while having initially opposed foreign intervention, are repeatedly calling for both economic sanctions and military action by the US and NATO countries.

“We will complete our victory when we are afforded a no-fly zone,” Hafiz Ghoga, spokesman for the rebel National Libyan Council, said in the rebel base of Benghazi, according to Reuters, March 9.

It could not be more obvious now that U.S., British and French imperialism are working hard to influence and support the National Libyan Council. Covert operations have been reported, and arms shipments are surely underway.

While the stakes are high and the outcome is uncertain, U.S., British and French imperialism see the situation in Libya as a new opportunity. Just because Gaddafi collaborated with imperialism, especially in the last decade, does not mean that world imperialism does not see a major opportunity in the overthrow of the regime now.

Lessons of Iraq, Yugoslavia

Let no person who calls themselves progressive forget that U.S. imperialism eagerly collaborated with Saddam Hussein in its struggle to bleed and exhaust the Iranian revolution, but then suddenly turned around in 1988. It began targeting Iraq for regime change and saw the overthrow of the Baathist regime as a huge opportunity for imperialism to recapture Iraq’s vast oil reserves.

A no-fly zone, no matter if it is declared by U.S.-run NATO or a U.S.-dominated United Nations, would include the massive bombing of Libyan installations. And as we saw in the case of Yugoslavia and Iraq in the 1990s, a no-fly zone is both the suspension of sovereignty and the precursor to a larger war.

Yugoslavia, a significant regional force, was literally disintegrated by the onslaught. It has been torn into small pieces that remain under foreign occupation. Iraq too has been shredded and ripped apart and will be under U.S. occupation for a very long time, unless the people rise up as they have in the past.

It would be the greatest tragedy for Libya and its people if the anti-Gadaffi opposition allows its struggle to be the pretext and gateway for imperialism to re-subjugate the country.

Progressive and ant-war activists inside the United States must expose the lies of the U.S. war machine and the intrigues of “their own” ruling class. The U.S. government never says that its wars of aggression are for imperialist aims; rather, it is always for the noblest cause. While it condemns Gaddafi for the use of Libya’s air force in a domestic civil war, it is dropping bombs and missiles on the children of Afghanistan 7,000 miles from U.S. shores.

When the Libyan revolt began, some in the U.S. left erroneously argued that the West would back Gaddafi to the hilt. They mobilized for street demonstrations against Gaddafi’s government, while neglecting to include demands opposing U.S. intervention. They attacked those in the U.S. anti-war movement who insisted on the primacy of the slogan: “No to U.S. intervention.”

When U.S. and European imperialist powers proceeded to slap economic sanctions on Libya, moved warships off its coast, and began rapid preparations for intervention, these same left forces were caught flat-footed, apparently in denial. They only began to adjust their slogans several days later.

Shame on those U.S. liberal groups and “progressives” who consider the prospect of U.S. and NATO intervention to be a secondary factor in this unfolding struggle.

Bombing Libya to “save Libya”: The forces behind this war

The same global powers that used the force of arms to colonize Africa, suction out its natural resources and enslave millions of its people are now raining bombs and missiles down on the continent’s largest oil producer.

A great irony in the vicious and yet cowardly attack on Libya is that the same exploiters and enslavers of Africa explain their most recent act of mass violence as motivated by a tender concern for democracy and freedom for Libyans.

On Libya’s eastern border is Egypt, where the U.S. government financed, armed and cheered on the Mubarak dictatorship until the very last days of the tyrant’s hold on power. Even during the people’s uprising at Tahrir Square and elsewhere, the spigot of U.S. “foreign aid” kept flowing to Mubarak. After Israel, Egypt’s torturers were the second-largest recipient of this “aid.”

The U.S. government is at war again. How could they get away with launching another war when they tell us the country is so broke that vital public services must be slashed and public workers must be fired in massive numbers?

The people of the United States are opposed to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and would openly oppose a third U.S. war in a Muslim country. So President Obama, Secretary of State Clinton and Secretary of Defense Gates are going out of the way to assure the country that all the bleeding will be exclusively from Libyans.

When U.S./NATO forces destroyed Serbia and broke up Yugoslavia in the 1999 aerial war, they dropped 23,000 bombs and missiles on Yugoslavs and not one U.S. soldier died.

As they did in the 19th century, the colonialists—who have now morphed into modern-day imperialists—bribed or coerced some indigenous elites to function as their partners and clients. Today, the so-called Arab League provided some early cover to mask the imperialist character of the operation.

As U.S. planes drop terror bombs in the center of Tripoli, CIA-operated drone aircrafts are carrying out missile attacks on villages in Pakistan, and Pentagon forces are bombing the people of Afghanistan. Tens of thousands of U.S. troops still occupy Iraq after a war that took 1 million Iraqi lives.

The dominant force practicing terrorism in the world today is the U.S. government, the Pentagon and the CIA.

Washington’s goal in Libya is to have the U.S.-backed rebel leadership of Libya’s civil war take power in all of Libya or, as an alternative, to become a new governing power in the oil-rich eastern part of the country.

The cheerleaders for this “democracy movement” went from right-wing Republicans to some liberal Democrats. It is a repeat of the political alignment that led to the first Iraq war in 1991 and the Yugoslav war in 1999. In this case too, they were joined by some in the U.S. anti-war movement, including some self-described “socialists,” desiring to show their “democratic” credentials and wanting to accommodate to liberal mainstream public opinion. By their cheerleading for a rebellion whose leaders demanded foreign intervention, and focusing all their fire on the Libyan government, they only contributed to confusion in the weeks leading up to the onslaught against Libya. They are embarrassed about their position now that the imperial carnage is clear for all to see.

The United States needs a real anti-imperialist movement—a movement that can resist the lies and demonization schemes that the corporate media churns out to justify military aggression. That’s why the ANSWER Coalition is mobilizing a movement in the streets that extends a hand of solidarity to the people of Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine who have both suffered and resisted the terrorism of the greatest war machine in human history. Please join us in the streets in coming days in demonstrations across the country.

Massive Earthquake and Tsunami hits Japan!

Just out!!! A 8.9 Magnitude Earthquake triggered a Massive Tsunami along Japan’s north-eastern coastline… Unprecedented Devastation…  A moment of silence for the souls gone…

HERE IS THE IMPACT AND TRACKING MAP!!!

Tsunami

A tsunami (pronounced sue-nahm-ee) is a series of huge waves that can cause great devastation and loss of life when they strike a coast.
Tsunamis are caused by an underwater earthquake, a volcanic eruption, an sub-marine rockslide, or, more rarely, by an asteroid or meteoroid crashing into in the water from space. Most tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes, but not all underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis – an earthquake has to be over about magnitude 6.75 on the Richter scale for it to cause a tsunami. About 90 percent of all tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean.

Many tsunamis could be detected before they hit land, and the loss of life could be minimized, with the use of modern technology, including seismographs (which detect earthquakes), computerized offshore buoys that can measure changes in wave height, and a system of sirens on the beach to alert people of potential tsunami danger.
NOTE: If you see the water recede quickly and unexpectedly from a beach (this is called drawback), run toward higher ground or inland — there may be a tsunami coming. Also, if you are on the coast and there is an earthquake, it may have caused a tsunami, so run toward higher ground or inland. Some beaches have tsunami warning sirens — do not ignore them. The first wave in a tsunami is often not the largest; if you experience one abnormally-huge wave, go inland quickly — even bigger waves could be coming soon.

The Word Tsunami:
The word tsunami comes from the Japanese word meaning “harbor wave.” Tsunamis are sometimes incorrectly called “tidal waves” — tsunamis are not caused by the tides (tides are caused by the gravitational force of the moon on the sea). Regular waves are caused by the wind.

The Development of a Tsunami:
A tsunami starts when a huge volume of water is quickly shifted. This rapid movement can happen as the result of an underwater earthquake (when the sea floor quickly moves up or down), a rock slide, a volcanic eruption, or another high-energy event.

After the huge volume of water has moved, the resulting wave is very long (the distance from crest to crest can be hundred of miles long) but not very tall (roughly 3 feet tall). The wave propagates (spreads) across the sea in all directions; it can travel great distances from the source at tremendous speeds.

The Size of a Tsunami:
Tsunamis have an extremely long wavelength (wavelength is the distance between the crest (top) of one wave and the crest of the next wave) — up to several hundred miles long. The period (the time between two successive waves) is also very long — about an hour in deep water. In the deep sea, a tsunami’s height can be only about 1 m (3 feet) tall. Tsunamis are often barely visible when they are in the deep sea. This makes tsunami detection in the deep sea very difficult.

The Speed of a Tsunami:
A tsunami can travel at well over 970 kph (600 mph) in the open ocean – as fast as a jet flies. It can take only a few hours for a tsunami to travel across an entire ocean. A regular wave (generated by the wind) travels at up to about 90 km/hr.
A Tsunami Hits the Coast:

As a tsunami wave approaches the coast (where the sea becomes shallow), the trough (bottom) of a wave hits the beach floor, causing the wave to slow down, to increase in height (the amplitude is magnified many times) and to decrease in wavelength (the distance from crest to crest).
At landfall, a tsunami wave can be hundreds of meters tall. Steeper shorelines produce higher tsunami waves.

In addition to large tsunami waves that crash onto shore, the waves push a large amount of water onto the shore above the regular sea level (this is called runup). The runup can cause tremendous damage inland and is much more common than huge, thundering tsunami waves.
Tsunami Warning Systems:
Tsunami warning systems exist in many places around the world. As scientists continuously monitor seismic activity (earthquakes), a series of buoys float off the coast and monitor changes in sea level. Unfortunately, since tsunamis are not very tall in height when they are out at sea, detection is not easy and there are many false alarms. Sirens at affected beaches may be activated — do not ignore them!
Wind-Generated Waves vs. Tsunami Waves:

wind wave vs. tsunami

Regular waves (caused by the wind) are very different from tsunami waves. Tsunami waves are much faster than wind-generated waves and they have a much longer wavelength (the distance from crest to crest). In the deep sea, tsunami waves are very small, but by the coast, they dwarf regular waves.
How Often do Tsunamis Occur?
Tsunamis are very rare. There are roughly six major tsunamis each century.
Tiny Model of a Tsunami:
You can make a tiny model of a tsunami by dropping a rock into a bowl of water, causing ripples to propagate (travel) outwards from the site of impact. Another way is to slightly jolt the bowl of water and watch it slosh over the rim on one side.
